Empowering Secondary School Students in Rural Communities with 21st Century Skills

Anytime I visit Lekki or some top secondary schools accross Lagos, I noticed these schools have all what it takes to teach their students 21st century skills. I entered one of the class, the class had a projector, free WiFi and conducive with air condition. I asked myself how much would a student pay to enjoy many of these Facilities? Over =N=300,000 per term (3 month) which is equivalent to $1000 (Excluding fee for extra-curricular). I looked at myself and I said, "The community where I was raised, students do not have access to such facilities." Let's forget the facilities, "can they even afford $3 for feeding ?. The children of you and I may find it difficult to attend such schools.

I visited a school in a particular area in Ogun State and I saw the teacher hustling with a student to ensure he pays his school fee. You may want to ask how much 1000 Naira I.e. equivalent to $3.

The fact is children in rural communities face starkly a different life because of the kind of environment they found themselves in. They attend schools but do not enjoy many of the benefits that comes with it. Some of them haven't even seen a projector. The World Economic Forum said by 2020 some skills such as complex problem solving, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, creativity, service orientation, negotiation, quick decision making etc will be needed in the workforce and for the works of the future. How do we prepare children in rural communities for that future? When their classrooms isn't conducive? When the roads that lead to their school is bad? When the environment is fill with negativity? When they graduate and they can't create solutions?

Honestly, I believe in the education of children in rural communities, because its only through education they can change the circumstances they inherit. I believe they can create solutions to many of their problems! From poverty to providing alternative ways to access quality education to promoting peace.

Hence, Skill2Rural Bootcamp will be filling some of these gaps. Skill2Rural Bootcamp is a 2 days Non- residential - Intensive programme that will be orientating, empowering and supporting 90 secondary school students and 10 teachers in Olambe - Matogun Community with 21st century skills!
